Often times when one is experiencing back pain, the usual response is to take it easy. While this is sometimes recommended in the short term, stopping all strenuous activities and/or staying in bed for more than one to two days can sabotage healing. Back exercises are crucial in rehabilitating the spine and alleviating back pain.

Controlled, gradual, and progressive back exercises distribute nutrients into disc space and soft tissues to keep discs, muscles, ligaments, and joints healthy. A regular routine of back exercises helps prevent stiffness and weakness, minimizes recurrences of pain, and reduces severity and duration of possible future episodes of pain.

It is important to consult with a trained spine specialist to develop an individualized program of exercises for back pain. It is imperative to perform the exercises in the correct form and technique. The most effective programs include stretching, strengthening, and low impact aerobic conditioning.
