The recent fungal meningitis outbreak, attributed to 233 cases in 15 states with 15 deaths, is linked to steroid injections for back pain. Those simply seeking relief from back pain are exposed to an unnecessary risk with these injections, as are many with commonly prescribed medications and surgeries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported one-third of prescription painkiller overdoses are caused by Methadone, now more and more frequently being prescribed for back pain. Many people are also struggling with substance use disorders (SUDs). Thirty-six to fifty-six percent of patients treated for back pain with opiods have some type of SUD. The use of prescriptions and over-the-counter pain products is proving to be damaging. This method only covers up the underlying problems while adding more. Side effects and addiction too often accompany the use of medications.
The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports around 800,000 people undergo back surgery each year. Spinal fusions have doubled from 1997 to 2007. Unfortunately, back surgery is not always the best answer and has led to a new diagnoses, Failed Back Surgery Syndrome, which isn't reversible. Many times the patient is left worse off than before surgery.
What can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones from risky steroid injections, addicting painkillers, and problematic back surgeries? Choose chiropractic first! Chiropractic is non-invasive, drug-free and effective. Many doctors are now recommending a conservative approach to managing back pain, with up to three months of chiropractic care being utilized before injections, painkillers, and back surgery are even considered. With chiropractic care, patients are more involved in their pain management. Chiropractors employ lifestyle modifications, such as postural advice, exercise, and stretching, along with spinal adjustments, to ensure patients avoid the negative outcomes of other approaches to back pain. Chiropractic patients are equipped with lifelong tools to prevent and manage pain and live a fulfilling life.
